This is the watch for serious Cartier watch lovers. It represents the brand’s current desire to prove to you that they are serious about watch making, not just making classy LOOKING watches. This is really one of the most obvious haute horlogerie watches of 2010 and will be released next month at SIHH in Geneva. We have a movement that has merged with the dial. The design is interesting because it makes the movement look petite and mostly absent, but it still has a very complex flying tourbillon (a tourbillon that is more exposed because it does not have a top bridge). You can see the Cartier “C” as part of the tourbillon carriage.
The movement is an (in-house I believe) Cartier Caliber 9455 MC manually wound movement that apparently has the prestigious Seal of Geneva. This seal indicates that the movement was made entirely within the caton of Geneva, using special high forms of decoration and quality. You can see how the movement bridges extend into the iconic Cartier Roman numerals that make up the skeleton of the movement (as well as the dial). Retained are Cartier’s almost ever present blued steel hands. The watch is in steel (not sure about the size). I imagine the price will likely be that of a watch that is in gold. Other touches like the blue jewel cabochon in the crown make the timepiece clearly from the house of Cartier.
Cartier indicates that they will only produce 100 of these limited edition Rotonde de Cartier Flying Tourbillon Skeleton watches. There will likely be at least 100 buyers. Looking back over like of Cartier, their products have held strong on the collector’s market as well as in the museum scene. With reasonably attractive looks, and the haute form of movement complication, watches such as this and ones like are sure to be perennial hits.
